The silverback is holding a fragile butterfly with a tentative thoughtful expression, thus echoing the childhood story we all know. This artwork challenges the concept of beauty. In my animal artwork , I try to capture the soul of the animal through many hours and layers of coloured pencil.

The silverback reference photo is from my good friend Dr Rhodri Jones. The butterfly reference photo is my own. It is literally the collaboration of two NHS staff members, which makes this art work all the more special.

In the original work, I combined multiple media; for the silverback gorilla I used graphite, conte , and charcoal pencils and for the butterfly I used watercolours.
