Peace Rose

This floral series includes many hours of coloured pencil work exploring the natural beauty, colours, textures and detail of each flower. Through my coloured pencil work I aim to capture the depth, mood and detail of a single tender moment in time. Every artwork has intricate details which is my signature style. This floral series is a collection of artwork exploring the natural beauty of common flowers.

First Drawing in this series is the ‘Peace Rose’. The Peace roses were previously named as ‘Madame A Meilland,’ after the mother of French horticulturist, Frances Meilland, who discovered this hybrid. In 1939 he sent the cuttings of this newly developed plant to his friends in Italy because he feared they will be destroyed during the war. During the German invasion of France, most of his plants were destroyed.

Later in 1945, after the liberation of France, he asked the Field Marshal Alan Brooke, who was a key figure in Liberation, to re-name this rose after him. Field Marshal Brooke politely declined the offer, saying his name will be forgotten soon. So instead his own he named this the ‘Peace Rose’. This it was introduced to the cultivators as the ‘Peace Rose’

Peace roses are hardy and relatively resistant to disease, making it very easy to cultivate.
