Description

During WW1, most of the fighting took place in Western Europe and the countryside was blasted, bombed, destroyed and fought over repeatedly. Previously beautiful landscapes turned to mud; bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow…
In the midst of this dark black landscape the bright red Flanders poppies started to bloom. Even in the middle of the chaos an destruction they flourished in the thousands upon thousands.
Then in the Spring of 1915,after the loss of a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was moved and inspired by the sight of these poppies that he wrote his now famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.
This poem in turn gave inspiration to adopt poppies as the symbol of remembrance and hope.
Poppies are my flower for November. Reference photos are also mine. When I took the photos a little bumble bee roamed around the flowers and settled in one. I captured him in the reference photo and left him in the drawing also.
